Musical musings by Carl and guests

Recording engineer, Dr. John W. Thomas, board member Jana Nelhybel, board member David Cheng, and composer Maurice Saylor (and some other people who are hard to identify). Photo by Mary Fetzko of the Czech Embassy.

A limerick from a friend:

There once was a pianist named Jacques,
Toured the world, winning fame, playing Bach.
But he was, while in Java,
Engulfed in fresh lava,
And now he is into Hard Rock.

From Dorothea Nelhybel:

Dear Carl,

I am finally back from Washington and just want to let you know once more how much I enjoyed meeting you and your musical colleagues. You all allowed us, the audience, to be part of joyful, spirited music making at its best--what a memorable experience! The program you had put together was delightfully varied and so enjoyable on many levels. To pair works by "serious" composers with more "swinging" music was truly inspired. The delighted reaction of the audience must have shown you how "right on" your choices were.

Again, thank you so much for a wonderful musical evening and especially for having given such fine performances of three of Vaclav's works. How he would have enjoyed meeting you all!

Best wishes and regards, also to Marilyn,
Dorothea

From my friend George, about the Czech Embassy concert:

"It was incredible--one of the most exciting musical programs and performances that I have attended in a long, long time. And there, in the center, was Carl, somehow managing to be both the dynamic creative force and laid-back impresario."

Thanks, George! I really enjoy compliments like this! And with the disappointments, setbacks, and general struggles of life in music, it is particularly nice to receive this kind of validation; I won't feel too guilty about enjoying the occasional appreciation.

The original cover of Jezek/V+W's "Tragedy in the Water"

Rhonda, Ben Redwine, several saxophones, Blair's tuba, Harold Summey, drums. Photos by Marilyn Banner (if you click on them, they get bigger).

Photos from the Czech Embassy concert October 19. Jeffery Peterson, tenor, Linda Smith, violin, Blair Goins, tuba, Joel Borelli-Boudreau, trombone. From the pre-concert run-through (Marilyn didn't shoot during the concert). The Jezek songs were a real hit - the audience demanded an encore. (You can hear the recording by going to the "MP3s" section).
