Mike Hummel has been awarded his PhD degree from the U of MD. His thesis is comprised in part of an analysis of interviews that he did with me and two other local artists. It is a very strange sensation to read about oneself in this way, but it is actually about the issues, and they are quite serious. Thanks for the link to Mike Hummel's paper. I've only had a chance to skim it, but it looks fascinating.

It looks to me a lot like an anthropological study, because the anthropologist relies largely upon "informants" -- individuals who are members of the society being studied -- for deeper insight and understanding. An example is Hortence Powdermaker's wonderful book, "Stranger and Friend". I'm guessing Mr. Hummel was more like a friend to you and the other two informants from the outset, given his own experience in comedy and music.

I hope to be able to spend more time with the paper. I also hope you may be willing to talk more about the paper and the issues it sets forth.
